Window Guards

Window guards are very important safety devices that are a must if you have toddlers and little children living in your household. Children under 5 years of age love to running around the house and tinker with almost anything, including your window. They love the idea that they can see their neighbors and other children playing outside of their homes, most times wanting to get out an play too.   

Research shows that in the US alone, more than 4,000 children are annually brought to the hospital because of the injuries they have incurred from falling out of a window.  Not only that, there is a rough estimate of 120 window-fall related cases of death. These numbers are huge knowing that we are dealing with precious lives. Children who are prone to these types of accidents are those who are five (5) years of age and below.

Window guards protect children from falling and prevent injuries and death. They are very safe to use and do not hinder escape from a fire or any other calamities.  

WINDOW GUARD INSTALLATION

Installing your window guards is very easy. Most guards will come with detailed directions that you can follow along with to ensure proper installation.  There are no risks, only benefits. Below are some tips to keep in mind before you start installing the security bars:

  • Screw them securely.  By secure I mean tight. You don’t what the screws to hang lose because it defeats the purpose of security and safety.  Screw them in all the sides of your window to prevent it from being dislodged.
  • Bars must be 4 inches (10cm) or less apart from each other.  Toddlers and little children are tiny. They’re so tiny they can fit into everything, including your window bars. And yes, they will want to squeeze themselves out merely because it’s fun. They’re your little explorers, remember? If they get between the bars, they fall.  So keep the security bars close to each other as much as possible.
  • Permanent guards. If you live on the 12th floor of the building, choose to install permanent window guards.
  • Make sure you install your window guards in all your windows especially if they can be reached by your child. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Window guards are available in almost all hardware stores and other home repair (maintenance) stores.  They come in different sizes and colors which allows you to choose the style of window guard that you want to complement the design of your own home.  Just make sure that they meet the desired requirements for spacing to prevent falls. Also check its strength. It should allow, not only adults, but little children  as well to easily open it in times of emergencies.
