Do-It-Yourself Home Security Tips

Here are some do-it-yourself home security tips that you can use to improve the safety of your home. When you want very effective home security, make sure that it is multi-layered. An expensive security system isn’t good enough if the windows on your ground floor are unlocked. You won’t be spared by thieves if your prized possessions are left within easy viewing of the windows.  Here are some basic do-it-yourself home security devices that you can easily install in your home:

  • Locks – Make sure that you purchase strong locks to use for your windows and doors. Locks should be put on all windows and doors, especially your basement windows. Thieves go after openings that are easy to break into.
  • Intercom system – Some burglars may pretend to be someone else such as a delivery driver or salesman so they could get inside your home.  An intercom system means that you don’t have  to open your door to anyone unless you’re sure about their identity. This will prevent break-ins and will give you enough time to call the authorities if you need to.
  • Motion detector lights – Burglars take advantage of the night’s darkness.  That’s why that most break-ins happen during the evening when nobody’s there to see them sneak in at the back of your house or into your basement window. Installing an external motion detector can alarm you of their presence. At the same time, this will alarm them too and would dissuade them from going near your house.
  • Alarm system – Installing an alarm system is another method of protecting your house. This will prevent them from breaching your home without getting caught. Here are some of the major components of a security system:
    • Control Panel – This serves as the central station of your security system.  You can control the rest of your system using this device. It also contains receivers that detect all the messages sent by the rest of your security system.  Make sure that you install them in a convenient place so that it will be easy for you to locate and use.
    • Transmitters and Sensors – They are sensitive to the changes in the environment that is covered by your security system.  The signals that they detect are directly sent to the control panel for you to see. Transmitters and sensors should be installed on windows and doors.
    • Siren – Sirens are a burglars worst nightmare.  Once sirens go off, it simply means one thing—they’re busted. It will alarm, not only the household members but, the neighbors as well.
    • Lamp module- This device automatically turns your lights on and off at pre-determined hours.  This makes it looks like there is someone in your house even if nobody’s home.
    • Touch pads – This is a portable device that also functions as your control panel. They act as remote controls which allow you to manipulate and control your security system from other areas of the house if you’re not near your main control panel.

These do-it-yourself home security devices can be bought from any big chain hardware store, online or even certain manufacturers. Make sure that you read the instructions before you install them in your house to make sure that you’ve installed them correctly.
